URBAN RETREAT
On this full city lot, the challenge was carving out some usable space along the steep hillside. At the bottom, a sunken hot tub is encased with boulders for cooling off; a retaining water-wall frames the hidden patio. Stepping-stone pathway meanders up the hill, past a mossy rest area. A no-mow lawn allows the dog to run around. At the top, a large stone-slab dining patio nestles among tall screening trees. In a secluded corner, soothing sounds of the Quan Yin fountain permeate the indoor and outdoor kitchens.
